Inquisitor Golesh Heldane was the primary antagonist of the novel First and Only.

Description[]

An Imperial Inquisitor of the Ordo Malleus and one of the Vermilion Conspirators, Heldane was a callous, ambitious agent who believed the best way to combat the forces of the Archenemy was to use borderline Chaos methods himself. Physically altered to appear truly terrifying to those whom he wished to control, Heldane was an extremely potent psyker and manipulator who posed a threat to the Sabbat Worlds Crusade with his lofty ambitions.

History[]

Heldane involved himself with Lord General Hechtor Dravere during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade for the purpose of obtaining control over an ancient weapon which he believed would give the armies of Mankind the power to defeat the Archenemy; in this at least, his motives were true, if not his methods. However, he cared little for those who stood in his way, and during the course of his machinations unhesitatingly ordered the unnecessary deaths of many Imperial servants, including Imperial Intelligence agents and even an entire regiment of Guardsmen, the Tanith First and Only.

After ordering members of the Jantine Patricians to abduct Major Rawne for questioning on the location of the mystery weapon, a surprise rescue mission by a group of Tanith men saw Heldane shot and mortally wounded by Hlaine Larkin, necessitating his placement into a life-support unit until his mission saw completion.

At the conclusion of the campaign on Menazoid Epsilon, Heldane used his psychic abilities to direct his mind-controlled pawn, an Imperial Intelligence agent named Fereyd, to claim the artefact as his own; this would prove to be a mistake. The Inquisitor over-extended himself, placing too much of his consciousness into Fereyd and, when the agent was killed by Colonel-Commissar Gaunt, the psychic backwash was sufficiently powerful to cause Heldane's mind to explode.
